Lancaster treasure hunt
Explore the city that gives Lancashire its name with our Lancaster Treasure Hunt.
The Lancaster treasure hunt is a circular route around the historic centre of Lancaster. Originating as Roman Calunium, Lancaster is mentioned in Domesday Book and received its first royal charter in 1193; but it was only elevated to city status in 1937. As well as its famous Castle (notorious for keeping the Pendle 'witches' in captivity during the 17th century witch hunts), Lancaster has a traditional market in its central square, and pretty cobbled streets with many thriving independent shops, bars and restaurants. The city stands on the River Lune, and in fact the whole area is called the 'Lune Valley'.
