Whitstable
With its charming streets and smugglers' alleys, it would be hard to find a seaside town more suited to a fun Treasure Hunt.
Hunt starts and ends at: Whitstable Harbour
Length of hunt: c. 2-3 hrs at a medium pace (excluding optional refreshment / pub stops)
Whitstable Harbour is the result of the birthplace of passenger railways, for the original 'Crab & Winkle Line' in 1832, and is a must-stop for the fish markets and views. The hunt leads us into Harbour Street, which has retained character and originality with its upmarket shops, restaurants and boutiques. Whitstable has a real artistic atmosphere, and is also a mecca for foodies intent on visiting the world-famous (and very pretty) Wheeler's Oyster Bar.
Turning off the main streets we check out Whitstable's notorious tiny alley ways, originally the escape routes for smugglers and their contraband to disappear unnoticed. Finally the beach path offers up a multitude of clues as we follow it along the front and back to the harbour.
We like:
- The Old Neptune – a pub on a beach with a great atmosphere
- Pearsons Arms for fabulous food
- Visiting during the summer Oyster Festival
