Lancaster
The city that gives Lancashire its name remains more like a market town.
Hunt starts at: Lancaster Town Hall
Hunt ends in: Dalton Square (back opposite the Town Hall)
Length of hunt: c. 2-3 hrs at a medium stroll (excluding optional refreshment / pub stops)
The hunt is a circular route around the historic centre of Lancaster. Originating as Roman Calunium, Lancaster is mentioned in Domesday Book and received its first royal charter in 1193; but it was only elevated to city status in 1937. As well as its famous Castle (notorious for keeping the Pendle 'witches' in captivity during the 17th century witch hunts), Lancaster has a traditional market in its central square, and pretty cobbled streets with many thriving independent shops, bars and restaurants. The city stands on the River Lune, and in fact the whole area is called the 'Lune Valley'.
We like:
- the historic winding streets near the Castle
- the bustling array of market stalls in Market Square
- the varied choice of pubs and restaurants
